Hello everyone. I am Iulia :). I want to share a framework from my submission to the Cluelessness Critiques Competition, which proposes constructive lens to support the long-termism.

The Challenge of Unawareness

Anthony DiGiovanni’s "Challenge of Unawareness" highlights a major hurdle for long-term altruists: because we are completely unaware of future possibilities, our expected value calculations and mathematical models often fall apart. Traditional Effective Altruism treats the future like a math puzzle requiring perfect accuracy, which unawareness renders impossible. Instead of solely trying to map an unseen future, this proposal suggests we integrate the Innate Abilities Model to focus on the human being as the core vehicle facing the unknown.

The Innate Abilities Model [1]

The model posits that humans are fundamentally good and already equipped with the inner capacities necessary for a deeply fulfilling life, aligning closely with Viktor Frankl's "will to meaning". Human nature is defined by seven capacities: to communicate, love, think, re/act, believe, choose, and incongruence. Because these abilities are fueled by neurotransmitters (like dopamine and oxytocin) and hormones to support our unique drive for meaning, human intentions and actions actually hold a strong degree of predictability.

Overcoming Evolutionary Barriers

For thousands of generations, humans lived in "deficit environments" characterized by scarcity and danger, which wired our ancestors into a permanent survival loop. While we have transitioned into an industrial and technological era that offers countless opportunities, our biological wiring lags behind. The primary constraint humans face today is the impossibility of our nervous system to be present. Today, this shift us into a state of chronic defense, hindering our openness. By building empowering environments, we can help people achieve true presence, naturally moving them away from conflicts and toward cooperative, meaning-driven solutions.

Guiding Funding and Action

To transform our cluelessness into an actionable roadmap, the proposal outlines four funding priorities to build better environments:

  • Build a Safe Environmental Baseline Today: We must invest in empowering environments that ensure deep systemic safety, allowing human nervous systems to escape chronic defense.
  • Address Biological Imbalances: Funding should help manage psychological states by balancing neurotransmitters, recognizing that modern environments often disrupt natural psychological homeostasis.
  • Mitigate Socio-Political Coercion: We must actively dismantle environmental constraints by understanding how systemic restrictions on economic, cultural, and social capital trigger chronic defense states.
  • Prioritize the Will to Meaning: Social and developmental environments must be structured to protect freedom and choice, ensuring individuals can actively fulfill their unique meaning.
